WIFE FOR LIFE offers advice, anecdotes and wisdom for a life long relationship.

By Ramona Zabriskie

A detailed and personal-anecdote-filled guide for women who wish to learn how to love a man for life.

How do people stay married for thirty, forty, or even fifty years? According to Zabriskie, matrimony is less of a passionate tour de force than a measured, committed, and deeply thought process whereby both partners need to really think about what it means to be married. As a woman who was married early and came within days of divorcing her husband Dale, Zabriskie makes it clear from the outset that marriage isn’t easy, but it is worthwhile. She explains that the biggest mistake people make is in attempting to marry their ideal versions of someone as opposed to the actual person themselves. She debunks myths of femininity and masculinity, and helps women understand how their behavior can be difficult for a man to handle. Finally, she interweaves each chapter with diary entries and stories from her own life in an attempt to illustrate how each couple must find the right balance and communication tools to create a solid and enduring partnership.

Zabriskie’s range of anecdotes is impressive and memorable, including one from Nancy and former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Apparently, Nancy and Ronald witnessed a couple in a swimming pool who were upset because one member of the couple had been “cool in the pool” to the other. This phrase ended up being their signal to each other in their marriage when an issue about feelings needed to be worked out. Zabriskie’s chapter on “Crazy Ladies” (Stupidia, Irreleva, Betraya, and Depressa, among others) serves as a hilarious and poignant portrait of how women can unwittingly antagonize men.

Indeed, the book’s greatest strength is its emphasis on being sympathetic toward your partner’s feelings, and working to repair misunderstandings and help each other through problems. This is not a book about two single people cohabiting under one roof; it’s about two people who are committed to loving each other, even if that means putting aside anger and frustration and focusing on healing instead.

Although the prose style occasionally dips into cliché, WIFE FOR LIFE is a solid and entertaining foray into the real work and joys of what a woman must do to create and maintain a loving, communicative, and dedicated life-long partnership.
