In this frolicsome mystery, Lexy brings biscotti to her grandmother, Nans in the nursing home. Instead of getting feedback on the biscotti recipe, Lexy gets drawn into a murder investigation headed up by Nans and her friends AKA, “The Ladies Detective Club.”

Lexy, owner of The Cup and Cake, is sampling her new Lemon Biscotti recipe with Nans and her friends, Helen and Ruth, when Ida, one of the four senior sleuths that make up their “detective club”, shows up and announces: “Ladies, grab your coats. There’s been another murder.” Lexy, despite the wishes of her boyfriend, Detective Jack Perillo and her better judgment, gets involved in the investigation to discover why two people have died in the nursing care section of the retirement complex.

Author Leighann Dobbs cooks up an entertaining premise with her band of senior sleuths, as Golden Girls meet Murder She Wrote. Though the plot in this mystery is not very complex or thoroughly unpredictable, Dobbs’ clean writing and likeable, offbeat characters move the story along, offering some entertaining moments. Though past the age of seventy, Nans and her friends are not only actively solving murders, but also tech savvy, utilizing gadgets such as special spy camera glasses that can take pictures or video. They must use their wits, ailments and talents to get them through some tough situations; for example when Lexy announces that she was looking for Ruth’s dentures under the victim’s bed, or Helen tries her hypnosis to retrieve information from another resident.

Dobbs provides several motives and possible suspects for the murderer, from the large and stern Nurse Bettina Rothschild to the suspicious janitor. In addition, to keep the story from stalling, Lexy is a little anxious because her love interest, Jack is acting suspiciously, too.

Though Lexy’s baking and cake shop do not play a huge role in this story per se; her baking is a vehicle for the LEXY BAKER COZY MYSTERY SERIES. In the back of the book, Dobbs includes two easy recipes that were mentioned in the story: black bean brownies and lemon biscotti.

3 BODIES AND A BISCOTTI is a fun recipe for a fluffy read, filled with a light plot and a sprinkle of likeable characters and humorous moments.
