What’s the book’s first line?

The first line of my Introduction:

“All my life, whether I  knew it or not, I was preparing to be a networking and referral expert.”

“After being in business for more than ten years, Jason decided to expand his business. ”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

To attract more success in business, you don’t have to network more. You just have to network more intentionally. This is the book that tells you how. Author Patti DeNuci has studied, practiced, and taught the art and science of intentional networking and attracting strategic relationships and referrals for more than 25 years. Her new book The Intentional Networker: Attracting Powerful Relationships, Referrals & Results in Business offers stories, techniques, and tips gleaned from her experiences as a respected entrepreneur, connector, and communicator. Nine strategically-ordered chapters provide a holistic view of what it takes to stand out in the crowd and be a more purposeful, polished, and productive networker; one that earns respect as well as referrals and results in business.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

As a writer I knew I wanted to write a book to share my experiences as an entrepreneur and connector. Several events and people helped me frame, develop, and complete my vision for this particular book: attending the eWomenNetwork International Conferences & Business Expo’s, getting involved with Mary Ann Halpin’s Fearless Women Global organization, and working with publishing strategist Jan B. King as well as Dianna Amorde of Inspired Leap Consulting, and Marcia Wieder of Dream University.  There are many others who inspired me and who are on my team, but these were where the seeds really started to germinate and flourish.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

Since my book is non-fiction, there really are no characters per se.  However I do mention real people — clients, colleagues and friends — whose identities have been blurred. One of my favorites is Ethan in Chapter Four. He has lots of contacts he wants to network and stay in touch with, but he starts to calculate how much time and energy it will take to build and maintain relationships with all of them. He realizes all this networking will take over his life and business. He’ll be attending breakfasts, coffees, lunches and happy hours 24/7. He gets the “aha” that it’s time to pare back and prioritize — become more intentional.   (This chapter is available as a free download on my website www.IntentionalNetworker.com.)

Ethan and all the people I mention in my book are “poster children” for so many people I meet and work with. And of course I see myself in all the people I mention and situations I describe.  We teach (or write about) what we need to learn!

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

The short answer: People should read this book so they can learn how to become more purposeful, polished, and productive networkers and business people; the ones everyone wants to meet, know, hire, do business with, and refer.  My colleagues have revealed to me that this isn’t just a networking guide, but a guide on how to be successful in business and in relationships.

The longer answer: You can spend so much time, money, and energy networking, meeting people, connecting, schmoozing, and building relationships.  But what does it really get you except stacks of business cards? Instead of frothing up the waters, why not invest a little time: A) getting really clear on what you want your networking to do for you and B) learning how to connect with greater clarity, confidence, and consideration for others? Why not gain the skills and insights you need to stand out from the crowd and attract relationships, referrals and results that are powerful and productive?  This is the book that helps you do that.
