Hank Quense Talks about “Moxie’s Decision”

IR Sticker IR ApprovedWhat is the name of the book and when was it published?

Moxie’s Decision.  It’s the second (and final) book in the Princess Moxie series.

 What’s the book’s first line?

From the Chronicles of Bildas the Surly: Circa 674 C.E. in the year 451, King Artie ruled in Camelot for the sixteenth year and King Artie defended southern Britain from the ravages of the Saxons.

Author Note: In these books, Bildas is a monk historian who I use to present background information (and humor).

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

Moxie’s story continues! Moxie is determined to rule as queen after her father, King Smedley, dies.  But Smedley refuses to acknowledge her as his heir.  Her uncle also wants the throne and he’s already tried once to eliminate Moxie’s competition.

Moxie recognizes she hasn’t been trained to rule and she needs lessons about the real world.  She decides to flee the castle to learn how to rule and to learn about life outside the castle.

Moxie faces unexpected obstacles as she struggles to cope with a brutal reality that tests her mettle and determination.

A coming-of-age story that is decidedly different than the usual ones. The book is filled with memorable characters, satire and humor.  What more can a reader wish for?  The story takes place against a backdrop of Camelot, but this Camelot is in a parallel universe. So don’t expect the usual stories and tales.  Ain’t gonna happen.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

I wrote a short story about Moxie a number of years ago.  I could never sell it.  Later on, I realized that Moxie is a terrible character for a short story; there is no room for her to develop or to have a character arc. It nagged at me that Moxie was potentially a great character and I had to do something with her.  So I set out to develop a novel about Moxie.  When I finished the planning, I had two novels to write in order to tell Moxie’s entire story.

I have to admit, I had great fun writing the novels.  Besides Moxie, my favorite character was Tristan, even though he didn’t have a major role in either novel.  I may have to do something additional with Tristan.

BTW, the failed short story is incorporated into Moxie’s Problem. Never throw out old material.  You never know when you’ll be able to use it.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

There are two reasons why someone should read this book (and the previous one, Moxie’s Problem).  The first reason is entertainment. The book is filled with satire and humor.  The second is a need to escape from the harsh reality of the modern world.  Take a mental health break!
