When an ordinary couple seems to be the key to saving humanity, they both must separately travel across space and time to see whether or not their love truly can stand the test of the ultimate distance in a suspenseful and unpredictable ride.

In this first installment of the CROSSING IN TIME series, D.L. Orton does a thorough job of establishing the characters, stakes, and exact circumstances. The couple at the core of this story, seemingly star-crossed lovers Isabel and Diego — have a clear chemistry and the way in which the chapters switch perspectives, to capture both of their points of view, enables the deep sense of connection they share. Neither one can live without the other and even when they have to hold out hope in times when they’re separated, they still manage to muster up the courage to fight — the elements, uncertainty, multiple timelines — for the chance to be together.

This novel takes place against a creative backdrop, throwing the world into apocalyptic mayhem and entrapping scientists, researchers, government officials, and a marine into a secret underground facility to try to pinpoint a cure and figure out the details for time travel. Although Orton does provide this stark difference between settings: above-ground versus underground, in a captivating manner, the story starts to get incredibly convoluted in its attempt to mix together its sci-fi, romance, and apocalyptic themes. It becomes increasingly difficult to figure out what Diego and Isabel’s respective missions are, what is causing disaster after disaster to hit the planet, and how anyone is managing to stay alive around the world in the exponentially harsh conditions. The messages that Diego and Isabel send back from the future to the present are enigmas that never quite feel fully solved and the story gets further bogged down by repetitive banter and extensive foreplay scenes between the two lovers.
