Eve Langlais Talks Inspiration, Why She Started Writing & Mercenaries from Outer Space

What a reader chooses should be about what caught their eye. Find something that seduces the curious reader in you.”

Eve Langlais is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of erotic science fiction novels such as When An Alpha Purrs and Bunny and the Bear that manage to be both hot and humorous. Here, Eve shares with IndieReader some insight to her out-of-this-world heroes and heroines.

when an omegaMaya Fleischmann (MF): How did you get started writing this genre?

Eve Langlais (EL): I’ve been a romance reader since my teens, and a voracious one I might add lol. In my youth I’d entertained thoughts of writing, but hadn’t really indulged in it because real life got in the way. That changed the day I sent a book with a horrible ending flying. When my husband asked me why I tossed the book at the wall, I told him it sucked. His reply? Then write something better. I accepted his challenge and the very next day sat down to write. Seventy odd books later, I’m so glad he dared me lol.

MF: What authors, books or television shows inspire you?

EL: I wouldn’t say any of those really inspire me lol. For me it’s the odd things that will strike me and make me go what if… For example, my idea for When An Alpha Purrs came about after a haircut. For some reason the oddest idea popped in my head. I wondered what would happen if a hairdresser cut a lion’s mane? Because in my world, lions are so vain, lol. With cyborgs, a song is the culprit. Every time I hear Mr. Roboto I want to write about metal men. As for Alien Abduction, I just have to peek at the stars to wonder what lies beyond them–because I’m sure it’s hot and purple!

C791MF: What do you think readers new to this genre might find surprising?

EL: I can’t speak for other authors in the paranormal and sci-fi genre, but I think some readers have this conception that SFR and PNR aren’t realistic, that the stories somehow won’t be as believable or romantic. I love it when they take a chance and read a good one. It’s like a whole new world then opens before them, in a sense it really does lol. The realism is there. The romance too. Forget the billionaire CEO. How about a mercenary from outer space, or a lion who lives as a man–but loves ferociously?

MF: Which of your books would you recommend as a starting point for anyone new to this genre?

EL: There is no one perfect book for everyone. It’s why I write diverse series from aliens, to cyborgs, to shifters, to demons… Some of them are chock full of humor (Alien Abduction, A Lion’s Pride), others have a strain of darkness to them (Pack, Bitten Point). What a reader chooses should be about what caught their eye. Find something that seduces the curious reader in you.

MF: Your sexy out-of-this-world characters must make women hope for life on other planets and alien abductions. Do you believe in aliens and UFOs?

EL: Hell yeah. I totally believe. One of my most fervent wishes is we know for sure in my lifetime. I would love to see a reality show based on another planet, about an alien culture.

a tiger'sMF: Some of your books have been translated into French, German and Spanish. Do you feel that anything gets lost in translation or do the foreign languages add their own edge and sex appeal?

EL: I honestly don’t know if my humor completely makes the transition. All I can really do is hope the translator managed to capture the essence and that the reader is transported to my world.

MF: I love the fact that you have a really down to earth bio. In an interview you mentioned that your advice to writers is forget the numbers and enjoy the writing. Do you live by that? Would you still be writing if you were not a bestselling author?

EL: I kept writing even after my first royalty check of $16. I had to because for me, it’s almost like an addiction. Once I started letting the voices out, they wouldn’t shut up. lol . So I listen to them and at one point, the readers get to hear their tale.

MF:Where do you see yourself and your characters in five years?

EL: lol, I see dozens of new faces added and new worlds. I see my ass still parked in a chair while the voices ride me making sure I tell their story.

lucifer'sMF: Can you tell us or at least tease us with what are you working on now?

EL: Right now I’m alternating between a new Lion’s Pride book for Luna, the lioness readers kept clamoring for. I am also in the edit phase for the first book in a new science fiction series I began. Pirate is book one in the Space Gypsy Chronicles.

MF: Do you have a favorite quotation from one of your books? What is it and who says it?

EL: lol, I can never choose one. It changes all the time. But I love it when readers find me on Facebook and post some. I love knowing what struck them as cool or made them giggle.
