In a beautifully down-to-earth illustrated journal of sorts, author P.L. Como reveals how a 21-day experience in Maui transforms her.

Como leaves her corporate job, home in muggy Florida, her soon-to-be-ex-husband, dogs and heads to Maui in an effort to ditch the ego’s needs and wants and find her voice, her Truth, herself.

21 DAYS IN MAUI recounts Como’s experiences on the island, surrounded by the inspiring free spirit energy of the people and the place. Como presents the heartwarming stories of the lively people she meets, the friends she makes, and her activities with a natural blend of humor and humility. It’s easy to relate to informal narrative style and squirm along with her during experiences as she describes her initial responses to various activities as “esoteric upscale hippie crap” and how, at an Asian enlightenment session “distraction and judgment have completely hijacked [her] experience.” Her ongoing dialogue, funny and bittersweet, about her separation from her husband also provides an ongoing challenge that lends credibility to her gradual and inconsistent transformation.

There is a sprinkling of cliché phrases such as “Tears well in my eyes”, and, generally, the narrative is more weighted towards telling about events than showing:  “The drive to Makawao takes us on twisty, curvy country roads cutting through beautiful fields of green . . .”. However; some vivid turns of phrases such as  “To meet Gem is to meet the wind” and pen and pencil sketches offer a personal touch to the inward adventure and do compensate for some of the skimping on sensual description.

Some of the questions and lessons that Como learns along the way – “What will I create today?” and “ . . . yet another one of life’s paradoxes: the more disciplined you are, the more freedom you have”  – might elicit skepticism for those grounded in life’s daily grind; but the warmth, authenticity and sincerity of Como’s journey may also spark the desire to reexamine the road ask, as Como did at the beginning of her journey: “if I were to let go and listen to the Universe, who knows what could happen?”

21 DAYS IN MAUI is an enticing and inspiring little journey for anyone looking for themselves, in a format that may be especially inspiring to those who journal.
