Witch’s Dark

By Ken Davis

IR Rating:
5.0
WITCH’S DARK is a fine example of balanced writing. Neither the history nor the fantasy overwhelms the plot and the characters have unique voices. It is a fine story that moves quickly and convincingly to its conclusion.
All is not well in Colonial Massachusetts in 1736.The witches of Salem have become restive, demons prowl the colony and the Rattlesnake Society is challenging the iron fist of the Crown. In order to protect Boston from the spells cast by the witches, Gov. Whitelocke has employed Dr. Ephraim Rush as the colonial Doctor of Magical Sciences.

IR Approved Sticker 2 As far as the Rattlesnake Society is concerned, they will be dealt with harshly for their treason by the Governor’s Own Regiment. Capt. Lieutenant Henry Rigsdale is given the mission to root out the rebels and keep the peace. Unfortunately, Dr. Rush’s magic seems to be failing and the Rattlesnakes have assassinated Gen. Whitelocke, the governor’s brother and Henry Rigsdale’s mentor. A delegation from London has arrived to oversee the fight against the Rattlesnakes and to put an end to the magical practices of the Governor’s magician. In the midst of this pandemonium, demons attack the citizens of Boston, who need the enchantments and spells that the King wishes to stop. Treason and sorcery have the town on edge as young Cate, a “half witch” comes of age facing the loss of her family and the uncertainty of her future.

WITCH’S DARK is a well-written fantasy where the scenes of colonial Boston are written as vividly as the supernatural. The characters are drawn just as sharply with their humanity overshadowing the demonic environment where they find themselves. The characters of Cate, Henry Rigsdale and Grayson Whitelocke react to the plot line by slowly evolving to face the danger. The best of these if Grayson Whitelocke who moves from a dissolute life to that of a general in the British Army. The author takes his time with these changes and the result is believable; a lesser author might have rushed the transformation and had a cardboard character as a result. The chapters alternate between characters. In each of the chapters, the story is advanced from the viewpoint of that character and the result is a much broader scope to the plot development. As the first book of a series, the author skillfully ends the story without the usual abruptness found in a multi book series.

WITCH’S DARK is a fine example of balanced writing. Neither the history nor the fantasy overwhelms the plot and the characters have unique voices. It is a fine story that moves quickly and convincingly to its conclusion.
