Olivia and Charlie are just two strong, independent, single women trying to live their lives and be happy. However, they operate a funeral parlor, are the only two witches living in a small town where witchcraft is not easily accepted, in which a killer has begun dumping bodies for Olivia to find.

Furthermore, these are not the only issues that cause a few complications in the lives of these two young women. Another problem for Olivia is that she just broke up with her boyfriend, who just happens to be a cop that she has to work with in her other job as assistant coroner. Also, neither Olivia’s power as an empath, nor Charlie’s precognitive abilities are much help to either of them while they try to find out what’s going on in their town.

Fortunately, author Gina Drayer has written the characters of Olivia and Charlie exceptionally well, and they both possess strong personalities, incredible wit, and good hearts. In fact, every character in LOTUS PETALS is written well, as is the story itself. Readers will come to feel that they know these people personally, the good guys, and the bad. You will be living the story with them, anxious to discover the truth, hoping that justice and truth win in the end, and that Olivia and Charlie both find the happiness and the peace they deserve.

Author Gina Drayer has created a terrific story, her magical details and paranormal features are accurate and believable, such as her descriptions of magical terms and symbols and what they are used for in the practice of Wicca. For example, Olivia uses her tattoo of a caduceus to aid her when using her witchcraft in her work as a coroner, which might just be a subtle chuckle at the not commonly known misuse of the magical symbol by the medical profession. In addition to the realistic adaptation of magic in the book, the characters traits and qualities are well developed and true-to-life, which is perfectly represented by the relationship problems between Olivia and Brad. Brad’s personality is such that many readers may find themselves personally relating to Olivia’s struggle to break free from an emotionally controlling boyfriend.  However, that may be best feature of this book – that there are deeper issues hidden just under the surface of the main storyline. Moreover, the plot is meaningful, natural, and flows easily, and Drayer’s writing style is graceful and fun. The only problem with this book is that the next one in the series isn’t written yet.

LOTUS PETALS is an engaging story that will delight readers who enjoy all things magical and mysterious. Suspenseful, captivating, and purely entertaining, this is a very well crafted and well written story with many diverse elements to offer its readers.
