LIAR’S PARADISE deftly weaves a revenge thriller with a character study into an engaging look at a city at the mercy of a reckless superhero. Dynamic characters, realistic dialogue, and a breakneck plot combine for one hell of a ride.

LIAR’S PARADISE follows a reformed criminal seeking revenge for his wife’s murder. However, the killer is a reckless, but popular, superhero that is seemingly immortal. Lex Tennessee’s quest takes him back to his criminal roots, through a lineup of eccentric characters, and ends with Lex facing The Cadet.

Lex Tennessee and his wife have a rocky relationship, one that stumbles over his past, disapproving father-in-law, and an increasingly unhappy marriage. While Lex struggles to stay on the straight and narrow, his wife steps out on him and cheats with one of the city’s most popular superheroes.  After growing weary of her, The Cadet tosses her aside. Quite literally in fact, and she plunges to her death in an “accident.” Lex learns she was murdered and she wasn’t the first, The Cadet cares little for the humans. After seeking help from a cast of colorful characters including a werewolf-like supervillain, a multiplying burlesque dancer, and an old flame, Lex discovers The Cadet’s weakness.

LIAR’S PARADISE is a fast and action-packed thrill ride. The superheroes and villains of the city are not perfect and deal with very human emotions, despite many being from off-planet. That is truly where LIAR’S PARADISE shines, the characters. For the most part, every character is fleshed out with interesting backstories and concrete motivations. An eccentric retired supervillain named The Lightning Fist is a great example. He sets Lex’s quest off in the right direction but adds a touch of humor to the proceedings. Characters really thrive thanks to the realistic dialogue and straight forward writing style, despite some minor typos. Dr. Cherry, one of Lex’s allies points out the plot quite nicely without being obvious:

“The Cadet is a bad guy. He saves people, but he’s putting people in danger so he can get laid.” Dr. Cherry looked up at Lex. “He killed your wife.”

The story is neatly encapsulated but leaves several openings for possible sequels. An aside to one of the characters mentions that it might be possible to give superhuman powers to mortal humans. A concrete ending for this thrill ride leaves readers satisfied while eager to devour the next in the series.
