Camille Matthews on her IRDA Winning “Quincy and Buck”

PATHFINDER EQUINE PUBLICATIONS BOOKWhat is the name of the book and when was it published?

Quincy and Buck published March 15, 2014

What’s the book’s first line?

“Quincy was a little red horse.”

What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.

Quincy and Buck tackles the topic of bullying. Quincy goes on his first trail ride in the desert hoping to overcome his fear of the wild animals he might meet. Then he finds out that the horse he has for a trail buddy is a bully. In the course of the day’s ride Quincy learns that bravery comes from  discovering your own inner strength. He also learns that bullies are afraid under their intimidating demeanor.

What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?

Three of my favorite things: horses, children and trail riding in the desert of New Mexico.

What’s the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?

Quincy is often doubtful about trying new things, but when he pushes himself, he finds joy in learning about the world and relationships. He probably reminds me of myself as a child and perhaps, most children.

What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?

He/she will learn many important things about bullies and bravery. Also, as with all of the Quincy the Horse Books, Michelle Black’s illustrations in Quincy and Buck provide a striking window into Quincy’s world.
