Marisa MacCallum’s world is shattering before her eyes. Violently drawn into a vortex that transports her into another world in a parallel dimension, Marissa finds herself an unwitting pawn in a game of high intrigue and power politics

A bright high school senior, Marisa was just days away from her 18th birthday and admission into a pre-med program at UC Irvine. Then her father died, leaving her and her brother, Mark, in the care of her father’s twin brother, Uncle Al. At this point her life takes a devastating turn as she is violently drawn into a vortex that transports her into another world in a parallel dimension. Marissa finds herself an unwitting pawn in a game of high intrigue and power politics where she is driven to a choice that will decide the future of the people of Cornelia.

Cheryl Koevoet has created a story of fantastic yet plausible characters and situations. Not everything is what it seems in this world of knights and ladies fair as revealed by the modern conveniences (a universal language translator that came through the vortex) and a very non-medieval outlook on a woman’s equality.

The characters are believable, even the monsters. Marisa’s love interest, Prince Darian, at first seems to be a caricature of Prince Charming but, by the time he reaches his castle he is shown to be a complex character who guards his moves and his motives. One of the interesting variations that the author uses in this story of inter dimensional travel is the creation of porousness between the two universes. Earth is affected by Carnelia and vice versa. Marisa is one of several Earthlings on Cornelia and there is a very creative explanation for Bigfoot and the Abominable Snowman on Earth.

The action is particularly well done, building from a slow movement during Marisa’s bewilderment to the excitement of an impending war. The only problem with the dialog is that Marisa has a tendency to respond with “Yeah” even when the rest of her dialog is quite formal. This can be disconcerting, especially since Marisa has shown herself to be intelligent and resourceful in every other way.

THE CARNELIAN LEGACY is the story of a young girl who refuses to be passive about her life and who, in the end, earns her happy ending.
