readers retreat man in cafe

Beam Me Up a Latte, Scotty

This week’s picks are for Sci-fi & Fantasy lovers. I’m currently working on the second book in my Written in the Sky series and the main character, Memphis, has to travel through space and another dimension. While searching for fantasy inspiration I stumbled upon a café that takes its fantasy theme very seriously.

Hobbit House in Manila is a Lord of the Rings-themed restaurant. With a staff of “little” people the bar was actually opened in 1973. The owner was a true Tolkein fan.

The restaurant is filled with murals depicting scenes from the trilogy. The décor alone will make any fantasy lover feel right at home though they’re miles away.

Our Sci-fi reader’s pick is The Wormhole Coffee in Chicago’s Wicker Park.

The shop has an actual DeLorean sports car in the window (pictured), retrofitted with a Back to the Future-style flux capacitor.

The care they took in restoring the old school memorabilia in the store is also applied to their espresso drinks. With comfy seating and delicious pastries this is definitely a sci-fi reader’s retreat!
