Verdict: Following my Toes is a story for anyone who has searched for their own identity through a web of others. It’s also a story for people who enjoy a boisterous page-turner.
Faith Emerson has some serious intuition. In fact, she thinks that she is psychic. When something good is going to happen, her toes itch; something bad, her skin hurts. However perceptive she may have been, she is blindsided by Peter, her boyfriend who leaves her for her best friend Lacey.
Up to this point, Faith has had a pretty stable life. She’s an English teacher in Duluth, and has family and friends of the normal variety. However, after Peter and Lacey get together, Faith decides she has to get away. Moving to Minneapolis on a whim suggested by her friend Carolyn, Faith gets a new lease on life. She finds an apartment, a job, and several interesting men to interact with.
What Faith doesn’t anticipate is a zany phone sex operator roommate (she calls it telemarketing) or a stalker who could be any of the various new men in her life. Faith meets Ethan as soon as she rolls into town in a car that needs fixing. Ethan; a mechanic, comes to her rescue. He seems aloof at times, and utterly perfect at others. Though there are some long shot coincidences involving a taxidermy convention and quite a bit of misunderstanding, Faith struggles to understand Ethan and in the process learns a lot about herself.
Osterkamp’s inventive characters include: Missy the wacky roommate, Bill the intense neighbor, Margaret the younger sister who appears spontaneously to crash on Faith’s couch, Carolyn and her own relationship drama and Faith’s unpredictable dating patterns with Ethan and Max. There is never a dull moment!
Following my Toes is a story for anyone who has searched for their own identity through a web of others. It’s also a story for people who enjoy a boisterous page-turner. Laurel Osterkamp thoroughly develops characters that are funny, intriguing and always have something up their sleeves (or in their socks in Faith’s case.)
