Heart of Darkness

By Felicity Heaton

If you are looking for a quick escape from reality sprinkled with sex, this is a fun and indulgent submersion into an adult version of vampire life.
Aleksandr is a vampire prince who has renounced his heritage in order to fulfill a 400-year-old bloody and self-appointed quest, to vindicate the death of his sister by a vampire hunter. Elise is a vampire guard living to protect her bloodline family. Both are quite content in the lives they have chosen.

But this is a romance novel and from the first moment Aleksandr and Elise meet, their life-decisions are thrown into question as they recognize the deep connection and sexual magnetism that they share.

Unwillingly, Elise and Aleksandr are taken on a journey of self-discovery and emotional growth as they explore this attraction to one another. Aleksandr has separated himself from vampire civilization, and his emotions, for so long that he doesn’t quite see Elise as much more than a conquest. Elise is the strong, independent woman who doesn’t want to be anyone’s one night stand, and definitely not with an arrogant man such as Aleksandr.

Through this character development and attention to details, Ms. Heaton provides an interesting background for a story about sex. And the sex is good – it’s just enough to keep you interested but not corny or so juvenile that you wince as you read it. Her descriptions get you into the moment, waiting for the climax along with her characters.

I do wish that there had been another set of eyes to proof-read before the book was published as I caught a number of grammatical errors. But they don’t interfere with the story – or the sex.

In the end, it was a fun read, one that I would dip into again when the mood strikes for a pleasurable escape.
