Artistic Endeavors

Roaming the halls of a museum and admiring the works of great artists is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.  Once the province of mainly students, senior citizens and stodgy educators, today museums offer meeting spaces and often play host to public events (see the recent CFDA extravaganza at the Met).

While in Madrid recently I spent a day at the Museo Reina Sofia. My time with Picasso, Dali and Palencia was followed by a lovely stroll through their garden. I ordered a cup of espresso from the little outdoor café.  Seating is available in the café area but I opted for one of the benches in the center of the Parque and spent a few hours sipping espresso while flipping through a recently purchased art book.

Cafe Des Artistes is this week’s Reader’s Choice and a domestic alternative to Madrid. It’s attached to the San Antonio Museum of Art and located on the Riverwalk. The café has a lovely terrace with shade and offers a casual yet upscale menu. The staff is helpful, but they keep their distance this allows you to enjoy your delicious frittata and appreciate the beautiful view of the water.
