Choosing an indie book can be harder than picking a Republican candidate. On the outside they may look impressive, but sometimes they can be…well, a little off-putting. And since indies don’t have what many consider an “official” stamp of approval from a trusted source like The New York Times, People magazine or your best friend Ginger—it makes it hard to decide which one to choose.
To make indie books more accessible, IndieReader’s editors and reviewers are launching a new feature that will regularly pick a best-selling trad pubbed book and suggest similar indie titles you might enjoy.
Our first pick, “50 Shades of Grey”, started life in 2010 as a fan fiction story about Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” lovers, Edward and Bella. Written by British author EL James, the story reportedly morphed into a steamy romance between “successful young entrepreneur” Christian Grey and “unworldly, innocent” literature student Anastasia Steele. The three titles in the series were recently scooped up by Vantage Books, which reportedly paid a seven-figure sum. Billed as “Mommy Porn”, all three volumes are heating up the bestseller lists.
