Alati & Piperi (Salt & Pepper)—Santorini, Greece

For this week’s Reader’s Retreat let’s take a trip to Santorini, Greece. With its awesome crescent of multicolored cliffs against the deep blue sea, Santorini is the most spectacular of all the Greek islands. It’s said that it inspired the legend of the lost continent of Atlantis.

Alati & Piperi was a short distance away from the villas by the water. I almost walked by the charmingly decorated restaurant, with its open kitchen and tiled floors.

The owner Irina was very welcoming and a great hostess. There’s no such thing as over staying your welcome in Greece. Order a plate of meat pies, sip on a Frappuccino and enjoy this island oasis.

This week’s reader’s choice comes from Robert Galinsky, the creator and director of Coffee The Musical.

Robert is no stranger to working in coffee shops, he came up with the idea for the musical while in Dean and Deluca on Prince Street in SOHO.  “When I had this vision of people bustling around to get their coffee and buzzing around after getting it.” Unfortunately Dean and Deluca no longer exists on Price Street, but Robert has found a worthy replacement in B-Cup Café, one of the Retreats from my book, Writer’s Retreat New York City Edition. “It’s a funky East Village throwback to the days of mix matched chairs and great food and drink.”
