Attorney Doug Koktavy brought home two black Labrador retrievers as pups, and promptly fell in love with brothers Boomer and Beezer.
As they became more and more integral to his life, he was unaware of what lay ahead: kidney disease for Beezer and bone cancer for Boomer. The shock of helping first Beezer through this fatal disease to the end of his life, followed a few years later by Boomer, caused this dog-lover to change his own life: to give up the illusion that he was in control and to follow his dogs’ teachings that living in the moment–preferably with a tasty piece of steak or a walk in the park–is the best of all possible choices.
Although people not used to pets may find it startling to read of Koktavy’s channeling of the dogs’ speech to him, readers will be won over by the openness and sweetness of the story, the profound love shared.
